Dr. William Sweezer, Jr., cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, has joined Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC). The Duke University physician will provide cardiothoracic surgical services at the Danville Heart Center.
The Los Angeles native has extensive and varied training as a general surgeon and more than 20 years of continuous private practice. He was most recently employed by Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo. directing a specialty clinic in Cardiac, Thoracic, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. Upon graduation, Dr. Sweezer completed multiple residencies of General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and Creighton University. He was also a Chief Resident of General Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
Dr. Sweezer later completed a fellowship and residency in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit and a three-month fellowship in Endovascular Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Hospitals in New York.

Since 2003, Danville Regional Medical Center’s cardiovascular surgery program has offered numerous vascular and open heart procedures, including: thorascopy, thoracotomy, mediastinoscopy, carotid endarterectomy, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), off-pump CABG and aortic/mitral valve replacement and repair.

Dr. Sweezer is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery and most recently served on the Surgical Services, Critical Care and Cardiovascular Services Committees, as well as the Tumor Board at Capital Region Medical Center.

Dr. Sweezer also holds many medical patents, performs community medical presentations, mentors students and youth, volunteers for the Veteran Honor Flight Program and participates in fundraising activities for the American Heart Association and Cancer Programs.
