Cathy Shelton Promoted at Danville Regional

Pittsylvania County Native Manages Physician Practices

DANVILLE, VA - (March 16, 2007) - A Pittsylvania County native, Cathy D. Shelton, has been promoted to Director of Physician Practices for Danville Regional Medical Center.


A resident of Ringgold, Shelton is responsible for management of the Medical Center's five physician practices, which employ more than 80 people. They include: Family Healthcare Centers in Danville and Gretna, the Children's Healthcare Center, Healthcare for Women and Southside Neurosurgical Associates.

Shelton joined Danville Regional as a medical secretary in l983 and worked in Finance and Information Systems before joining the Physician Services Department. There, she was Physician Liaison and, later, Retention Manager.

Shelton was placed in the redeployment pool twice at the Medical Center. "I was not certain what my future would be, but I had faith that if I performed at a high level, there would be a job for me," she said. "Since then, she has earned two promotions. "I'm proud to work here and support the dedicated people who deliver care to our patients. That's why we are here."

A graduate of Dan River High School, Shelton has an Associate in Science degree from Danville Community College. Her undergraduate degree is from Averett University, where she majored in accounting and management services. She earned an MBA from Averett.

Shelton is a Certified Medical Office Manager, Certified Medical Insurance Specialist and Certified Medical Coder. She is a member of the Virginia and the National Medical Group Management Association.

"While there has been an adjustment to make with the changes in the healthcare field and here at Danville Regional, I believe the result of the transition will be a hospital better equipped to meet the healthcare needs of the residents," Shelton said. "All businesses are undergoing change in today's environment.

"People's needs are changing as well," she added. "We are focused on providing the highest possible care, both at the physicians' offices and the Medical Center," she continued.

Shelton is active in the community. She is a member of Leadership Southside Planning Committee of the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce and a past chairman of the Community Development Committee.

At Ringgold Baptist Church, she sings in the choir, directs elementary education for the Sunday School program and serves on the Finance Committee. She is Secretary of Boy Scout Troop 382.

She and her husband, Michael, are the parents of two children, Ethan, 18, and Mackenzie, 16. Ethan recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
