Danville, Va. (April 2, 2010) - Patients in the Dan River Region are now benefiting from the
latest advancements in urological technology. Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC)
recently announced a million-dollar investment in its urological surgery suite. Urology involves
organs in the pelvis such as the kidneys, bladder and prostate.
“The new state-of-the-art cystoscopy surgical suite features a new operating table, a
renovated surgical suite and new camera and lighting that increases visibility to a level of highdefinition
quality,” said Danville Regional CEO Eric Deaton. “This investment in our urology
department allows us to provide advanced surgical services to our patients close to their homes
and families. Our primary focus will always be on providing our patients with the highest quality
of care,” he added.
Drs. Brett Akers and Joseph Carbone are surgeons who perform approximately 600
urological procedures a year at Danville Regional, and they believe patients will truly benefit
from these improvements.
According to Dr. Joseph Carbone, the new technology provided at Danville Regional
means surgeons are able to perform less invasive urological procedures, which in turn allows
for faster recoveries as patients spend less time under anesthesia.
“We are very excited about the new technology and the renovations made to the surgical
suite. We are able to perform several new urological procedures,” said Akers.
“By upgrading our area with high definition technology, we believe Danville Regional is
demonstrating its commitment to providing the tools needed to keep this region healthy. The
cystoscopy surgical suite is a wonderful addition to the procedures already available at Danville
Regional, and will allow us to continue providing excellent patient care,” said Dr. Akers.
Danville Regional is the leading medical center in the Dan River Region of Virginia and
North Carolina, providing open heart surgery and advanced cancer treatment. Approximately
140 physicians are on the medical staff. The medical center employs approximately 1,200
people.
