Danville Diagnostic Imaging Center, LLC. (DDIC) is the first clinic in the Dan River region to offer digital mammography exams to patients.
Digital mammography, also called full-field digital mammography (FFDM), is a mammography system in which the x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. These detectors are similar to those found in digital cameras. Researchers have found digital mammography significantly better at detecting breast cancers than the older form of mammography in three groups of women: women who were younger than 50, women with dense breast tissue and women who were pre-menopausal or peri-menopausal.
“In younger women and in women with dense breast tissue, research has demonstrated that cancers will likely be detected earlier with the digital mammography than with conventional film screen mammography,” said Dr. Michael Spencer, DDIC Medical Director. “From the patient’s point of view, the digital mammogram is essentially the same as having a conventional film screen mammogram.”
At DDIC, all mammography studies undergo a computerized assessment, referred to as computerized-aided detection (CAD). This assessment process assists the radiologists in detecting possible breast cancers at a very early stage while treatment is most effective.
“Early detection of breast cancer is extremely important,” said Eric Barber, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC). “We believe this is a very worthwhile and necessary investment and are proud to offer this new service to the community.”
Digital mammography is covered by most health insurance providers who recognize the advantages of this new service. However, some providers may still be in the process of developing their policy for payment of this procedure.
DDIC, which is affiliated with Danville Regional Medical Center, will have two digital mammography units. The first was installed in November and the second will be running by mid December. The total investment made by DRMC is approximately $1,000,000.
Danville Diagnostic Imaging Center is located at 125 Executive Drive, Suite D, in the Piedmont Regional Medical Center and offers services such as digital mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography scanning (CT), ultrasound and diagnostic radiology.
