Dr. Michael A. Moore Receives Fellowship Designation from the American Society of Hypertension

DANVILLE, Va. (June 11, 2010) - Dr. Michael A. Moore, Director of Continuing Medical Education at Danville Regional Medical Center, was recently named a Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension.

The Fellowship is given to those who demonstrate excellence in research and in clinical contributions to the study of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Hypertension is the most common form of cardiovascular disease and is a leading cause of stroke and heart attacks.

“I am honored to receive this Fellowship designation and to be recognized by my peers,” said Dr. Moore. “Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are serious medical conditions that unfortunately affect many people and are a leading cause of death in the Dan River Region. It is very important to educate people about the seriousness of high blood pressure and to help them understand how to decrease their risk for cardiovascular disease.”

The Fellowship designation also recognizes Dr. Moore for his leadership in efforts to help decrease high blood pressure. Along with other hypertension specialists, Dr. Moore founded the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control (COSEHC) in the early 1990s. COSEHC’s Mission is to empower health care professionals with better knowledge, tools, and competencies through continuous quality improvement to secure vascular health for all people.  He is the President of COSEHC, which sponsors 32 designated Cardiovascular Centers of Excellence that provide public education and up to date cardiovascular care.

“Dr. Moore is a world-class physician who is committed to improving the lives of his patients and people across the country,” said Eric Deaton, CEO of Danville Regional. “His tireless efforts to prevent hypertension and cardiovascular disease have greatly impacted many people, and we are proud of the work he continues to do.”

Dr. Moore has been a member of the medical staff at Danville Regional for more than 30 years, and he has served as Director of the Continuing Medical Education program for the past 16 years. He was named the national American Heart Association’s Physician of the Year in 2004 for his outstanding contributions to its mission.

Danville Regional is the leading medical center in the Dan River Region of Virginia and North Carolina, providing open heart surgery and advanced cancer treatment. Approximately 140 physicians are on the medical staff. The medical center employs approximately 1,200 people.
