Nurse Midwife Joins Healthcare for Women

Sandra Blackburn Has Attended 1300 Births

DANVILLE, VA - (October 5, 2006) - The Danville area has a new Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Sandra G. Blackburn, who practices at Danville Regional Healthcare for Women. Blackburn, who comes to Danville from Atlanta, has more than 11 years experience as a nurse midwife and has attended more than 1,300 births.

A native of Winston-Salem, Blackburn wanted to come back to this area to be closer to family. She has a Bachelor of Nursing degree from UNC-G and a Master's from East Carolina University, where her degree is in Nursing with Midwifery.

"Midwives view birthing not only as a medical condition, but also as a natural process," Blackburn explains. "We work with women to give them the birth experience they are looking for. Patients determine the level of involvement they want. A woman delivers her own baby through the process of labor - the midwife or physician is there to provide support and expertise as needed," she says.

Midwives have been involved in births since Biblical times. Women who understand about midwifery seek us out," says Blackburn. Approximately 10 percent of all births, or 300,000 a year, in the United States are attended by Certified Nurse Midwives.

Blackburn is also involved in prenatal and gynecological care, including annual exams, pap smears, breast exams, menopause and family planning. She will share call with Dr. Lenworth Beaver and Dr. Traci Gray, both physicians at Healthcare for Women.

Blackburn can be reached at 434.791.2629. Danville Regional Healthcare for Women is located at 159 Executive Drive, Suite E.
